How to Start Out as a Freelance Writer
Do you have a passion for writing? Maybe it is time to take it beyond just a hobby and turn it into a career. To do so, you do need to be determined, focused and driven. But if you really put in the work, you will see all the rewards! I can help you get started on your journey by sharing my experiences on the road to a freelance writer.
What Exactly is a Freelance Writer?
So, you love to write, but how do you turn it into a steady income? Become a freelance writer, of course! A freelance writer is when you are self-employed and write articles for various publications including blogs. There are several different opportunities out there. You can choose what you want to write about eventually, but first, you should take anything you can get so you can get yourself established as a writer and get the experience you need under your belt. Patience is key to a successful freelance writing career!
How Do I Get Started?
First, you need to get some practice and experience, which means you may need to start writing for free. I had a secretary job during the day where I was able to write blogs for the company and was able to volunteer my time in the evening to write blogs for free for an animal rescue. Offering your writing services to anyone, no matter how small it may be, will help you get the experience you need to evolve.
Remember, it isn’t just what you know, but who you know. Talk to friends, businesses and other places about helping them with their content. Or you can ask a local organization or magazine to publish your work for free, to begin with. This will help build up your portfolio and resume. Also, you will develop a style and find what you are looking for! By writing for a variety of things, you will be able to find where you are strongest and what type of writing you should pursue.
When submitting your articles, ask for feedback, especially at the beginning of your journey. Take these edits seriously and use them to improve your writing. But never take them personally! Remember, this feedback is only going to help you.
Once you have some experience, you can start looking for small paying gigs. Start with local and small publications or a small business. Even a digital marketing company so you can write blogs for a variety of clients, but don’t get too ahead of yourself at first.
Things you need to have completed before you can apply
- Business Cards
- Name/LLC in place
Once you get started and have been working for a few months at a smaller level, you can start applying for bigger and better jobs. Just remember to always try and have work lined up. It might not be a stable career, but you can make it one if you plan smart.
Tips to Remember!
There are a few things you need to keep in mind to achieve a successful career as a freelance writer. First, remember to ALWAYS and I mean ALWAYS, take constructive criticism. These edits are going to make you stronger as a writer and as a person.
Also, you always want to be doing research and keeping up with the latest writing strategies. Writing for a blog and writing for a magazine is going to be different, so do your research so you are aware of what you are getting into and what people are expecting from you.
Lastly, always strive to do better and grow. You never want to settle in this career. There is always a better job or a better paying gig waiting for you out there. Put in the work, do the time and work on growing to be the best freelance writer you can be!
